Research : Designers, Photographers & Companies

Research can be seen on my initial presentation layout. Research enabled me to back up the concept and ideas behind my self brand. I looked into Graphic Designers who focus on type, Jessica Hische. Other Graphic design studios specialising in Weddings, Unique Weddings & Events, Oyster and Pearl Design. With a broader outlook I researched how major event companies use Graphic Design and this spurred my research into Vision Events . I also researched a more interactive engaging approach to design by researching Bompas & Parr.

Also researching companies like YCN and Raw Design Studio encouraged me to look into working practice, where I'd like to work and a more collaborative approach. Inspirational tributes to my self brand. Fashion designers like Vivienne Westwood and Marc Jacobs also inspired the generation of my ideas. I looked into designer Suzanne Neville's sophisticated classy style as these were traits associated with my my personality which I wanted to reflect in my brand. Finally I also researched different styles of photography and photographers another digital element that was important to consider for the brand. As photography is often a key element to any event including a wedding. I researched Atken, Love Oh Love and Fiona Kelly Photography. The extensive range of research backed up my concept and the idea behind my brand. The personal approach is mainly reflected in the personality traits and styles within my research.

Research should include the following:

- Quotes from Vivienne Westwood and Marc Jacobs

- Raw Design Studio

- YCN

- Vision Events

- Bompas & Parr

- Unique Weddings & Events

- Oyster & Pearl Design

- Jessica Hische

- Suzanne Neville

- Love Oh Love Photography

- Atken Photography

Talks and Presentations

I watched several different talks and presentations to reflect on successful examples of presenting these included TED Talks, Mr Bingo and Casey Neistat's Bike Lane video. These different presenters went from formal to a more casual comedy approach to presenting. The presenters and presentations were successful mainly due to being so engaging and interacting with the audience. An example of doing this was through the use of comedy. Mr Bingo and Casey Neistat used this technique as well as a more personal approach to their presentations which worked well. They also used more alternative methods such as a video which can be seen as more interactive and engaging than a still life slide with text. I learnt the importance of a presentation being mainly visual in order to engage an audience. The successful methods and attributes in these presentations enabled me to learn from these traits and attempt to apply and learn from them for my own presentation.

Presentation Evalulation

How I felt about Presenting & was it a success?

I felt the presentation went as well as it could of gone. This was the first presentation I had done since GCSE English Language and has always been one of my biggest fears even from when I was young. Although I understand the importance of the skill of presenting for my career and in the creative industry. It is important to be able to confidently present my ideas. Although I was nervous I believe this presentation was a step in the right direction and will eventually help me to overcome nerves.

The improvements I could make would make the presentation even more visual with absolutely no text on the slides, but this will be easier after I have built more confidence and feel more comfortable with presenting. This leads to another obvious improvement to conquer my nerves.

Overall the presentation went as well as it could of gone. It has allowed me to learn how I can improve and preform better in the next presentation. It really helped me gain further insight into industry and working practice. This has been an essential part to my learning and progress on the course. Enabling me to clearly reflect on my strengths and weaknesses. Hopefully development in these personal and working practice skills will help improve my work and turn some of my acknowledged weaknesses eventually into strengths.

Presentation initial thoughts & Crit

Quotes that inspire me:

“Fashion is very important. It is life-enhancing and, like everything that gives pleasure, it is worth doing well.”
—Vivienne Westwood

“I always find beauty in things that are odd and imperfect, they are much more interesting.”
—Marc Jacobs

Title: Alex

Pay off: Design is Love. Love is Sweet...

Description:  Specialising in Wedding and Event design my goal as a designer is to make a big moment or big day memorable with a humorous approach using personalised puns.

Feedback : Look into more influences and present more visually with less text? Perhaps answer a question creating a pitch style presentation.

After the critique and a brief run through presentation I knew I wanted to add more research including how Graphic Design is used in major events and example companies, some wedding photographers and other research such as my research on Bompas and Parr and YCN. Whilst also making the presentation less text heavy and more visual. Visually presenting my ideas is more appealing to an audience over text. Below are the slides of my developed presentation after the critique with peer and tutor feedback.
