Professional Design Practice : The Brief - Part 2

A Creative Brief Part 2

After understanding the brief fully the creative process can begin this includes research and brainstorming. At this stage the theory anything is possible applies enabling a designer to fully explore possibilities exploring these through imagination and creativity without being compromised or pulled up by the client views which may occur in later stages of development.

Checking against the brief

It is important to check progress against the original brief not doing so can result in not meeting the requirements set out by the brief. This ensures work isn't just submitted but actually answers the brief. It is difficult but often important to establish links of your design decisions, this also helps put the design in context for the client.

Research

Research offers designers a vast amount of graphical potential, relating your own design practice to an existing design, object or place etc. can prove very beneficial.

Consider the following:

- The sector your client belongs to. Researching how competitors handle branding and identity then look how yours can be treated creatively different.
- Themes and messages your client wants to project. Obtaining key words and qualities explore these further.
- Do not bombard a client with too many concepts - even at an initial stage a couple are substantial to show variation.

Mindmapping

Brainstorming or mind mapping proves useful at this stage to combine linguistic and logical thinking with intuitive and pictorial thinking. This highly effective technique is useful for both idea generation and in research.

Summary

Focused research and using mind maps helps conceive ideas and checking progress against the original brief will maximise potentially producing something your client likes and wants to see developed.
