Graphic Design in Film
What is the job?
Graphic artist's may spend up to six weeks on one action prop for a film. Working closely to the Production Designer, Props Master, Standby Props and the Art Director. A Graphic Artist will often meet with the director during pre production to discuss requirements. They also need to work alongside suppliers to commission the items so they can be duplicated making them available on the first day of principle photography.Although sometimes the actors also work on set to demonstrate a prop to an actor or actress. Items are often designed by the use of freehand drawing and calligraphy skills laid out on a computer using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. Whilst Graphic artist's may also work closely alongside Visual and Special Effects Departments. Establishing links with suppliers is also important for materials and resources such as specialist printing or reprographic and book binders etc.
Graphic Artists is mainly always on a freelance basis and is expected that an artist works as and when they are required. You will be provided with a contract between yourself and the employer. The working hours can be long and can involve working long time periods away from home.

Skills & Knowledge Required
Graphic Artists must have a vast set of skills by understanding techniques which can include fonts and calligraphy. Also with knowledge of up to date digital manipulation and illustrative software.

Training and Qualifications
Likely graduates of Graphics, Architecture, Art, Theatre, Interior Design or 3D Design. Or include higher level courses in Film and or Theatre Production Design. After training it is also important to experience how the working department works.
