Working Practice
Clients are all different most of the time no two are the same. They come from different professional backgrounds and designers rely on them to pay their fees. Especially freelancer's a key aspect of their job involves looking for and gaining new clients. It is also important to understand what the client wants. Clients can often benefit designers by pushing their work beyond the safe confines they find comfortable. The very best design often come collaboratively between the designer and client.
Designer and Client Relationship
“Without clients there is no graphic design and without demanding clients there is no great graphic design.” So says Adrian Shaughnessy."
All clients should be treated with respect and attentiveness similarly to how you would treat your friend. This doesn't necessarily mean be-friend your client as a professional detachment is a good thing. A designer should always work on a client relationship to prevent any drifts - such as a lack of communication occurring. Clients aren't all bad but may have diverse views which as a designer you must be able to consider and adhere to. A designer should train themselves to be hyper sensitive to client needs.
It is a big mistake to make the assumption all clients are the same or have the same expectations of the designer. Some clients may want to be highly involved in the design process, needing lots of attention whereas some may be suspicious of the idea graphic design has value to help their business. A designer therefore must develop empathy understanding their client. When a designer strikes the right tone with a client this will build rapport enabling the designer to have a clearer understanding as to what the client wants. Rapport is necessary to maintain long term relationships with clients.
Retaining Clients
It is important to make sure a designer's clients are aware the designer is available and looking for new work. As it is hard to gain new clients simply from scratch. As a designer it is also important to keep up standards, delivering goods on time and within budget to avoid clients looking elsewhere. It is important to be honest when discussing problems and brief's with the client. This includes defending design decisions when questioned and able to admit wrong doings. Being attentive to client's needs and predilections conducting a manner and delivering work agreed to with a client will enable a designer to hold onto a client as much as possible.
